Belo Monte Dam Complex.. Please sign petition


Belo Monte would be a project bigger than the Panama Canal, flooding at least 400,000 acres of rainforest, displacing 40,000 indigenous and local people, and destroying the priceless habitats of countless unique species -- all to create power that could easily be generated through investments in energy efficiency.

Pressure on President Dilma against the dam is rising, the President of Brazil's Environmental Agency just resigned, refusing to issue Belo Monte a construction license and challenging strong political pressure to go forward with this disastrous project. Environmental specialists, indigenous leaders and civil society agree that Belo Monte will be a massive environmental scar in the heart of the Amazon.

 Construction could start next month - let's raise the pressure on President Dilma to stop this dam!

Sign the petition now, before the bulldozers move in -- it will be delivered to Brasilia! We urge you to stop development of the Belo Monte Dam Complex. Instead of this environmentally, socially, and economically disastrous project, please invest in energy efficiency and clean power sources, protect the basic human rights of indigenous people and local communities, and support sustainable development that protects lives and ecosystems.

    Allison Langdon, who reported on this in July 2011 on 60 Minutes has an interesting Blog..

    '..scientists worldwide have claimed the dam will be inefficient. And that’s not the worst of it, 60 mega dams are planned for the Amazon, stripping the world of one of its last natural wonders, causing untold environmental damage."

    okay... neverrrrrrrr mind that message saying i came to this page and clicked the site then signed the petition but for some bizarre reason couldn't access the 'submit' box at bottom of comment box...

    (dumbass me, hadn't been draggin the page alllll the way down... now i have)... so now can type annnd comment....

    Thanks for taking the time David to sign.

    you know.. for something on such a huge scale.. detrementally so... Ive not spoken to many people who had heard anything about this. I first heard about it last July whilst watching 60 Minutes on TV, but even then this project had been in the wind for some time. How could something like this fly under the radar??????????
