Retired NYC Subway Cars

Did you know, that retired NYC subway cars have been towed to a location off the coast of Delaware, where they are dumped into the Atlantic Ocean to begin their second life as artificial reefs. "They are basically luxury condominiums for fish, " Jeff Tinsman, artificial reef program manager for the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, siad as one of the 48 of the 19-ton retirees from New York City sank toward the 666 already on the ocean floor. The wheels and undercarriages were removed for scrap, leaving just the bodies. In the lst several years, the artificial reefs have drawn swift, open-ocean fish, such as tuna and mackerel, that use the reef as a unting ground for smaller prey. Impressed with Delaware's artificial reef program other states have now started competing for the subway cars, which New York City provides for free.

  3. I have mixed feeling about this, as it is still dumping garbage into the ocean, things that normally would never be in the ocean! But I guess the fish have taken advantage, so what can you do? LOL. I love your little slides too, really cool! XZXZ

  4. Great way to recycle. Cool for the fish. I had heard this done with old airplane... boats.... subways cars is a new spin on it. Like goddess said up there.. hope it doesn't eventually bring other sorts of problems. Hoping they did the appropriate studies before hand.
