  7. if 1x0 is written as (1x0), the answer is 14. As currently written, the answer is 0.

    1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1 x 0 = 0

    1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+(1 x 0) = 14

    using the rules of BODMAS

    1 x 0 = 0 +1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1 -1


    because...


    There are no brackets, there are no Powers, there are no division, the Multiplication is worked out before the Addition and Subtraction.

  22. ...so, Heather.... do you understand that its the order of sequence as to what answer you receive.

    we do the multiplication aspect first which is 1 x 0 = 0
    then we do all the Addition which is 15
    then we do the subtraction -1 from 15.

  29. I mentioned what it was in an earlier comment David but It wasnt set out step by step so the best way I can explain BODMAS

    BODMAS is the sequence of operations when determining a mathematical equation.

    Each letter stands for an operation.
    The letters are listed in order of operations as they are applied.

    This means that to work out a sum we do not begin at the start (left side) and work through to the end of the line (right side).
    We work through the sum using the sequence of operations.

    In their order, the sequence of operations is..

    B=Brackets
    O=Of powers
    D=Division
    M=Multiplication
    A=Addition
    S=Subtraction

    so work through this particular sum, when applying the sequence of operations it will give you the answer 14.


    even though the sum we are working out is written as this line...
    1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1+1 x 0 = 14
    this is not the order of sequence that we would apply to bring us to the answer.

    we would instead place the 1x 0 as the first part of the sum to be worked out.. now you could write the sum as..
    0 +1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1-1+1+1+1+1+1
    The next order of sequence is Addition.. so add all the +1's
    0 + 15 -1 = 14
    The next order of sequence is Subtraction.. so subtract all - 1's
    0 + 15 - 1 = 14

  30. very true Annette but if you look at my explanation to David above you will see that I am not adding all the numbers before multiplying.

    Instead I am multiplying 1 by 0.. which will be 0. then that leaves all the other digits infront to be dealt with in the correct sequence of processes.
